Capture It! Film Competition

Join in the Films for Learning fun by creating short films which explore big ideas in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM). Here is a list for inspiration. Feel free to choose one of these or generate your own big idea.

Cells, Energy, Forces, Interdependence, Water, Climate change, Sustainability, Electricity, Light, Stem cells, Cloning, Genetically Modified Foods, Nanotechnology, Genetics, Sustainable transport Systems, Time travel, Global Warming, Rising Sea Levels, Cern Particle Generator, Robotics, Bio Diversity, Other Intelligent Life, Planets, Buildings/Mega Structures.

Capture It! is a film competition for schools affiliated with the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust (SSAT). The deadline for entries is June 13th, 2008 and winners will be announced at the SSAT’s Annual Science Conference on July 1st, 2008. Prizes including web cams, digital video recorders and copies of Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate are on offer to both schools and students. Competition Terms & Conditions

  1. ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to any SSAT-affiliated schools or students resident in the UK. Employees of Microsoft or its affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising or promotion agencies are not eligible, nor are members of these employees’ families (defined as parents, children, siblings, spouse, and life partners). Students are responsible for seeking the permission of their parents/guardians and schools as applicable prior to entry.
  2. TO ENTER: Entry into this competition may be made by visiting www.filmsforlearning.org (“Website”) and submitting an online film entry form, along with your teacher’s name, school name, age group, i.e. Year 9, email address, school’s email address and of course the film (which you upload). Multiple entries from schools, teams and individual students will be accepted. Entry constitutes full and unconditional acceptance of these Terms and Conditions. Microsoft reserves the right to disqualify anyone in breach of these Terms and Conditions.
  3. ENTRY SUBMISSIONS: Entry submissions for Film Competition shall include a film that is uploaded to www.filmsforlearning.org. All entry elements must be original. Please refer to ‘copyright note’ below. Entries may be made in the following Categories: 1. Science, 2. Technology, 3. Maths, and 4. Engineering.
    • Teams may consist of up to six students plus two teachers per team.
    • Films must a maximum of two minutes including any titles and end credits.
    • Films must be original work and should not infringe copyright. Where copyrighted material is used, written permission must be held by the school and credited appropriately in the film’s credits. Copyright free music may be used but must also be credited.
    • A short summary of the film’s content, plus names and role of all actors, directors, camera operators, etc. will be requested from shortlisted teams.
    • A copy of a signed parental permission form for each student must be held by the school.
    • Films must be submitted via the competition page on www.filmsforlearning.org
    • Files should be WMV, MP4 or MOV video files
    • Files should have a minimum resolution of 640 x 480 pixels.
  4. TIMING: This competition runs from 12:00 a.m. February 26th, 2008 to 11:59 p.m. June 13th, 2008.
  5. USE OF DATA: Personal data which you provide when you enter this competition may be used for future Microsoft video-related marketing activities. If you agree to this use, please tick the box on the Website during the registration process.

    SELECTION OF WINNERS: The winner of this Film Competition will be determined through public voting on www.filmsforlearning.org and by a panel of judges. The public voting process will narrow the entries in each category to a short list of three films. Then, the panel of judges including at least one independent member will review the shortlist of films and choose the winners.

    For all categories, the judges will be looking for outstanding work from contributors in many areas that could include cinematography, direction, innovation, creativity and originality. They will be looking to see whether the film content is well structured and holds the viewers interest; whether it uses techniques and features such as use of language or animation in a relevant way; whether the film is technically proficient and well edited, makes good use of styles and conventions; and is age/audience appropriate.

    The shortlist of films will be announced on www.filmsforlearning.org on June 24th, 2008.

    The winner(s) will then be announced at the SSAT Science conference on July 1st, 2008, and each winner will also be notified by email on this same date.
  6. PRIZES: There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in each Category plus an overarching winner for best work across all STEM categories. First place winners will receive both a school prize and individual team member prizes. Second and third place winners will receive individual team member prizes.
    • Science -- The 1st place winner of this category will receive a digital video recorder and copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and each team member will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value. The 2nd and 3rd place winners of this category will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value.
    • Technology -- The 1st place winner of this category will receive a digital video recorder and copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and each team member will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value. The 2nd and 3rd place winners of this category will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value.
    • Engineering -- The 1st place winner of this category will receive a digital video recorder and copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and each team member will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value. The 2nd and 3rd place winners of this category will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value.
    • Maths -- The 1st place winner of this category will receive a digital video recorder and copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and each team member will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value. The 2nd and 3rd place winners of this category will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value.
    • Cross-STEM -- The 1st place winner of this category will receive a digital video recorder and copy of Windows Vista Ultimate and each team member will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value. In addition, the 1st place winning team will have an opportunity to participate in a film workshop with Microsoft video experts and a member of the film industry. The 2nd and 3rd place winners of this category will receive a LiveCam VX-7000 web cam or potential choice of prizes at equal or lesser value.
  7. Prizes are as stated and non transferable. No cash or other alternatives available. Microsoft reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value. The prizes will be sent by recorded delivery by the end of July 2008.
  8. WINNERS LIST: The winner(s) consent to their school name being made publicly available. The winner(s) school name will be available for a period of 6 months after the closing date by viewing www.filmsforlearning.org.
  9. OTHER: No correspondence will be entered into regarding either this competition or these Terms and Conditions. In the unlikely event of a dispute, Microsoft’s decision shall be final. Microsoft reserves the right to amend, modify, cancel or withdraw this competition at any time without notice.
